The Daring Gourmet Kimberly Killebrew

Hi, I’m Kimberly Killebrew.  Wife of one, mother of two, cook of many.

Come travel the world through your taste buds!

I’m originally from Western Europe (Stuttgart, Germany and Cambridgeshire, England), am widely traveled, and am now living in the United States with my husband and our two adorable children.  I love preparing and experimenting with a large range of flavors and cuisines.  Passionate cook, recipe developer, traveler and photo enthusiast, I LOVE FOOD – pure and simple!

Being married to a doctor, I emphasize health and healthy eating.  As a wife, homeschooling mom, and marriage & family therapist, I also believe that eating the occasional naughty indulgence contributes to happy and healthy relationships – and sanity!

As I like to joke with my fellow therapist friends, I now provide “food therapy” :)

— Since its creation in 2013, The Daring Gourmet™ now averages over 4 million monthly visitors and 80,000 email subscribers.  We couldn’t have done this without you.  Thank you for your support! — ❤️

Daring Gourmet Bio Page Collage

Cooking has been one of my biggest passions ever since I can remember.  I was taught to cook by my Bavarian mother, a wonderful international cook and my culinary mentor, who involved me in her cooking adventures from the time I was 4 years old.  She instilled in me a love for good food and an appreciation of a wide spectrum of world cuisine.  Though I later received further training, it’s my mom who deserves most of the credit.  Many of my recipes are influenced by European heritage and my travels throughout the world.

I love developing original recipes, revitalizing classics, and demystifying the obscure.  This food blog features a little something for everyone – everything from the simple to the complex, the known to the obscure, the healthy to the…well…not so healthy, the mild to the spicy, the carnivorous to the omnivorous, the near to the far, the classic to the original, the sweet to the savory…and simply downright good eats!

When I’m not visiting new places by foot, I’m traveling the world through my taste buds.  Come join me!

    Dear Kimberly,
It was wonderful to run across your site. I was born in England, but consider myself half a Schabe. I spent a great deal of time there and speak the language. My mother was English and my father was a German POW from the Schabischen Alb area. My family emigrated to the US many years ago. I was looking for a recipe for a really good potato salad such as I am used to. Oddly enough, it was in Otley, Yorkshire, and Peterborough that my father was held as a POW.
You are absolutely right, nothing matches the Schabischer Kartoffel Salat.
I am going to try your recipe.
I am also considering writing a blog of my own in the near future.
I will be an ardent follower in the future.

Thank you so much for the compliment, Peter, and for sharing some of your background. I lived just outside of Peterborough for several years and it’s so strange to think of that area as having once held POW’s. Though I guess it makes sense considering RAF Alconbury is nearby. In any case, I’m glad you held on to your heritage and hope you enjoy the potato salad as much as we do. Happy cooking and Guten Appetit! :) Kind regards, Kimberly

Kimberly, thank you for your lovely blog/website. I found this when looking for recipes for pork schnitzel. Then I also found instructions to make my own tahini. (I am tired of the rubbish, you can buy in Cambridge). I am an elderly, self-taught, foodie from Sri-Lanka, now living in Cambridge, but loved your site. Now I shall look to see if you have instruction for making sauerkraut .

Thank you, Dinakantha, I really appreciate that. I was just in Cambridge a few weeks ago. I used to live just north of there for 6 years and went back with my family to visit. It was so nice being there again. I agree, nothing beats homemade and when it comes to food that is true for virtually everything. And yes, a Sauerkraut recipe is coming soon, stay tuned! :) Kind regards, Kimberly

    Hi Kimberly,
I found your website just before Christmas and am so impressed with this incredible resource! Thank for the amazing international cuisine and your thoughtful documentation of each recipe’s origin. Being “eine Schwaebin” from “Schwaebisch Gmuend” (about 60 kms east of Stuttgart), but living in Canada, I can say that your Peffernuesse and Hazelnut Maccaroons are spot on; my family commented they were the BEST they ever had :-). Baking your recipes made me remember my mother’s Christmas kitchen. An absolute delight. Today I prepared the Lemon Quinoa and Bean Salad .. so lecker ! I will be visiting often. Thank you again.

What a lovely beautiful mother you are….
It’s so nice to see a woman married, having beautiful blonde children (instead of a dog, or worse…) and cooking great food…
The occupied/hijacked media has encouraged women to hate White men, get covered with vile tattoos and piercings, go serial whoring and never have children….
You ancestors are PROUD of you….

I’ll be looking forward to the 3 recipes you mentioned. I had to look up Maultaschen since I had not heard of that and, oh my, it does look good! In what part of Germany did you live? We’ll be having rouladen and your German red cabbage in a few days.

For some reason, I’ve had a real taste for an Israeli breakfast. I really enjoyed those when we visited Israel many years ago. One can learn a lot about a culture through its food.

Hi Karen, I’m from Stuttgart. My mom is from Bavaria but lived most of her life in Stuttgart as well. I grew up spending a lot of time in Bavaria so I claim both areas as home :) I did a study abroad in Israel in my college days and for part of it spent some time in a kibbutz at the Sea of Galilee. I remember the meals we had there including the breakfasts, especially all of the fresh yogurt which I always loaded up on. What do you miss most about Israeli breakfasts?

I stumbled on your website while looking for a German red cabbage recipe to go with rouladen for my son’s birthday dinner. After spending an hour traveling through your site I’m so glad I found it! My husband, 2 sons and I lived in Hong Kong for a year (sabbatical) and in Edmonton, Alberta for 16 years. We were fortunate enough to travel around the world and loved learning new cultures and foods. Now I want to try your recipe for Gambian peanut stew, as well as the pickled beets, and on and on! By any chance do you have a recipe for sauerbraten? I assume that would be different from the senfbraten.

Hi Karen, I’m so happy you found us – welcome! It sounds like your family has had some wonderful experiences through the years. Like you, I love exploring the foods of the world. I will admit that it’s pretty ridiculous that I’m from Germany, have had this blog going for over 3 1/2 years and still haven’t published my recipe for several German classics like Sauerbraten, Rouladen, Maultaschen (especially considering those are three of my all-time favorites) and many others. They’ll all come in time though :) In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the recipes you try and look forward to “seeing” you around! Best, Kimberly
