About Me & Press Stuff

Hi, I’m Kimberly Killebrew.  Wife of one, mother of two, cook of many.

Come travel the world through your taste buds!

I’m originally from Western Europe (Stuttgart, Germany and Cambridgeshire, England), am widely traveled, and am now living in the United States with my husband and our two adorable children.  I love preparing and experimenting with a large range of flavors and cuisines.  Passionate cook, recipe developer, traveler and photo enthusiast, I LOVE FOOD – pure and simple!

Being married to a doctor, I emphasize health and healthy eating.  As a wife, homeschooling mom, and marriage & family therapist, I also believe that eating the occasional naughty indulgence contributes to happy and healthy relationships – and sanity!

As I like to joke with my fellow therapist friends, I now provide “food therapy” :)

Daring Gourmet Bio Page Collage

Cooking has been one of my biggest passions ever since I can remember.  I was taught to cook by my Bavarian mother, a wonderful international cook and my culinary mentor, who involved me in her cooking adventures from the time I was 4 years old.  She instilled in me a love for good food and an appreciation of a wide spectrum of world cuisine.  Though I later received further training, it’s my mom who deserves most of the credit.  Many of my recipes are influenced by European heritage and my travels throughout the world.

I love developing original recipes, revitalizing classics, and demystifying the obscure.  This food blog features a little something for everyone – everything from the simple to the complex, the known to the obscure, the healthy to the…well…not so healthy, the mild to the spicy, the carnivorous to the omnivorous, the near to the far, the classic to the original, the sweet to the savory…and simply downright good eats!

When I’m not visiting new places by foot, I’m traveling the world through my taste buds.  Come join me!

— After 8 years, The Daring Gourmet now averages over 4 million monthly visitors and 80,000 email subscribers.  We couldn’t have done this without you.  Thank you for your support! — ❤️

Hi Ralph, were you serving an LDS mission? :) Was Falmouth one of the cities you served in? I have a lot of from South Wales and we love that area too – we’re especially fond of Pembrokeshire, the coastal area up through St. David’s and the Brecon Beacon area. I hope you have a chance to make these pasties and that they bring back many wonderful memories for you! :)

    Quark
    Hi Kimberly
How could you believe that QUARK is a German „invention“ ?
Quark is used all over Europe and nearly each country has its own recipe.
I would expect you to get some more back ground information before you say that Quark originates in Germany !
    Regards
    Richard

Hi Richard, I didn’t say the Germans “invented” soft, spreadable cheese. I said that “Quark” – under that name – originated in Germany. It’s Germany’s version of this soft cheese product. There are most definitely other countries (in Europe and beyond) that make the same or similar kind of cheese under different names, but in this case, being from Germany, I’m featuring “German Quark”, which also happens to be the most popular version of this kind of cheese.

    Hi Kimberly

Stumbled upon your site when looking for some authentic German Christmas food. Our German Christmas guest has stayed with us many times and always eats our traditional English roast (without gravy for some reason?) So I was looking for something she is more used to with some sauce. Absolutely besotted with your site and inspired to cook more international dishes. I’m a true meat eater – so is our guest, but my daughter is vegetarian. You have catered for all of us! Easy to follow recipes and a background to each dish – yummy and educational. Can’t wait to get cooking – you are now my ‘go to’ recipe site. Thank you so much.

Thank you, Julie, and I’m so glad you found us! I miss those traditional English roasts complete with roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. While I make them regularly at home along with other British favorites, the setting and atmosphere of course just isn’t the same. And so every time we visit England we always make sure to go to the pub for our Sunday roast fix :) And I always request extra gravy. I have NO idea why she wouldn’t eat the gravy – definitely not typical German, haha! :) Thanks again, Julie, and I hope you find some recipes you and your family enjoy. Happy Christmas!

In Salt Lake City, there is a fabulous German bakery, Vosen.s German Bread Paradise. They make a wonderful baurenbrot. I’m working on my sour rye starter but I do not have a good bauernbrot recipe. I am wondering if you might have one or point me to a web site where I could obtain one.

    Thank you very much.

    You’re my favorite food expert.

Hi John, in the event you are going to visit Las Vegas, which is closer to you than Salt Lake City, we have a great German bakery with two locations here. The owner and his wife are German and so is their bakers and the whole stuff. I love their light rye, dark rye, sunflower and walnut bread very much. The pastries and cakes are delicious. Anything they bake is just the same like you would get and taste in Germany. In case you want to check them online – german bread bakery las vegas (typed as one word) dot com.

Hi Kimberly, I just found your website looking for how to made Greek yogurt. I made your crock pot yogurt and it is awesome. Thank you so very much. I am an old lady 83 living along and very over weight, at least 50 lbs. and I started the Shepherd’s Diet. That is cutting out sugar and bad cabs. I can have berries so I have them with the yogurt, all I can say is OMG! It is so good. So far I have lost 7 lbs. its a good start and your website is a great place to go for delish recipes.

    Thank you, Arlene

Thank you, Arlene! And congrats on those first 7 pounds, that’s terrific! I know, I LOVE this yogurt and it’s my go-to when I have a sweet craving. I add some berries or some low sugar fruit preserves and stir in a little stevia and it’s like dessert :) Good luck with your dietary goals. I’m always amazed at how much better I feel physically – more energy and more alert mind – when I go for long periods of time without sugar or simple carbs.
