Hi, I’m Kimberly Killebrew. Wife of one, mother of two, cook of many.
Come travel the world through your taste buds!
I’m German from the Stuttgart area of southern Germany and later lived for several years Cambridgeshire, England, all the while traveling the world. I moved to the United States in my mid-20’s where I now live with my husband and our two kids. We live on our 55 acre homestead with a massive vegetable garden and fruit orchard where we grow most of our own produce with the company of our coonhound Huxley, our rabbit Buddy, 13 chickens and 10 very noisy Guinea fowl. Having received my cooking training in Germany and England with specialty classes in France, Italy and Spain, I love preparing and experimenting with a large range of flavors and international cuisines. Passionate cook, recipe developer, traveler and photo enthusiast, I LOVE FOOD!
Being married to a doctor, I emphasize health and healthy eating. As a wife, homeschooling mom, and marriage & family therapist, I also believe that eating the occasional naughty indulgence contributes to happy and healthy relationships – and sanity!
As I like to joke with my fellow therapist friends, I now provide “food therapy” :)
Since its creation in 2013, The Daring Gourmet™ has grown to a place where millions of people visit every month for tried and trusted recipes. By 2015 I quit my private counseling practice to run my website full-time and haven’t looked back since. I couldn’t have done this without you, thank you for your support! ❤️
Cooking has been one of my biggest passions ever since I can remember. I was taught to cook by my Bavarian mother, a wonderful international cook and my culinary mentor, who involved me in her cooking adventures from the time I was 3 or 4 years old. She instilled in me a love of good food and an appreciation for world cuisine. Though I later received training in Germany, England and the United States, it’s my mom who deserves most of the credit. My Oma (German grandmother) was also a major influence on my progression as a cook. As a young woman in Silesia (Breslau) my Oma trained as a professional cook and took those skills with her when she and my Opa later moved to Bavaria and later Stuttgart. My Oma was likewise a fabulous cook and going over to their house for Sunday dinners were something we always looked forward to. I grew up learning everything I could about cooking from both her and my mom. When we later moved to England my love of cooking and training continued through my young adulthood and broadened through my travels throughout Europe.
My recipes are influenced by both my German and British heritage and my extensive travels throughout the world. I love developing original recipes, revitalizing classics, and demystifying the obscure. This food blog features a little something for everyone – everything from simple to complex, popular to obscure, healthy and…well…not so healthy, carnivorous and vegetarian, sweet and savory, classics and originals, dishes from every corner of the world, and simply downright good eats!
When I’m not visiting new places by foot, I’m traveling the world through my taste buds. Come join me!

I came across your website last night when I needed to remind myself how to make schnitzel! I, too, am half-German and grew up on amazing Bavarian food. Now I live 3000 miles away from my mom and that means I have to either go out to a German restaurant (thankfully there are a few in my area of San Francisco!) -OR- I have to make it myself. Yes, I’m finally “growing up” and making schnitzel at home!! lol Thanks for the incredibly easy to follow recipes and fantastic photos. As soon as I get a spaetzle maker, I’m going to be using your recipe for that, too. Looking forward to exploring your many recipes. So glad I found this site! PS Beautiful family–including the horse and dog!! :)

Thank you so much, Gabby, and welcome!! I’m absolutely thrilled that you’ve found my site and have been trying some of my recipes. You’re fortunate that you have some good German restaurants where you live. I’ve yet to find one that serves good food, they’ve all been so disappointing even though they’re run by Germans. Looking forward to your feedback as you’ve had the chance to try some recipes. Happy cooking! Best, Kimberly

Hi, I just found your website while looking for a cream of celery soup. Looks easy and can’t wait to try it! Thanks so much. I’ve just started getting a box of organic vegies delivered each week and am excited about trying new recipes with whatever is delivered to me each week. Received a huge cabbage too and will try making cabbage rolls tomorrow. I have three young kids (5, 2 and 7 months) so love getting them involved in eating healthy food, cooked from scratch! Am looking forward to reading more from you blog! Cheers!
Kimberly @ The Daring Gourmet says
Hello and welcome! Cooking from scratch is so rewarding and it’s a lot of fun getting the kids involved. I have a 2 and 4 year old and while my 2 year old eats most things, my 4 year old son is pretty picky. But when he helps cook the food he is much more likely to eat it. It’s great teaching and bonding time in the kitchen, too – even if it sometimes ends in disaster, which is sometimes does! ;) I’m thrilled you found my blog and hope you’ll return often! Cheers, Kimberly

I discovered your blog 2 weeks ago and am addicted!! Made the chicken Wellington and it was unbelievable. I was truly amazed that I made such a complicated recipe and it came out so delicious. My husband, who never says anything good or bad could not stop raving about the dish. I also made the Carmel walnut and pear cake for dessert. It disappeared overnight! I’m making your coq a vin this weekend. Can’t wait! Love you kiddo. Keep up the great work.
The Daring Gourmet says
Oh, Melba, that makes me SO happy to hear! Truly, you have no idea! The Daring Gourmet just celebrated it’s 1 year anniversary earlier this week and it’s feedback like yours that makes it all worth it. So thank YOU! Best, Kimberly

Just found your blog. Thank you for all your hard work.
My mother got me involved in cooking with Christmas cookies. At first, she would get everything ready and put the cut out cookies on the tray and then I could add the sprinkles. Then I could cut the cookies out myself, and then I could roll the dough. I would stand on a chair next to her and add the ingredients to the bowl as she instructed, and then – oh joy! – I could crack the eggs into the bowl..
I was 8 when I made my first batch of chocolate chip cookies, from scratch, without help. I’m not sure how she did it, but she stayed in the den and living room until I brought her my first batch from the oven.
Thank you for your story!
The Hadster
The Daring Gourmet says
Hello, Hadster, and welcome! That’s a wonderful story and some wonderful memories – thank you for sharing. My kids are 3 years and 18 months old and though they’re still far too young for most kitchen tasks, it’s really fun to get them involved in even the smallest ways. Yesterday I taught them how to sprout alfalfa sprouts in a sprouter for the first time – boy were they excited to be able to shake some seeds onto the tray! I’m looking forward to seeing their excitement as the seeds begin to sprout and grow. Now, if only they would be willing to EAT those healthy sprouts! :)
