Why Make Your Own?

Whether for dipping chicken nuggets, fries or pretzels, I’ve always been a huge fan of honey mustard sauce. But as is the case with all store-bought condiments, they’re full of preservatives, additives and flavor enhancers and so, as always, I recommend making your own. Not only because it gives you full control over what goes in it – and what stays out – it also tastes soooo much better! Give it a try and I’m confident you’ll agree that there’s simply no comparison.

Honey Mustard Sauce Ingredients

This honey mustard sauce uses just a handful of ingredients and ones that you probably already have in your pantry. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:

  • Mayonnaise: This forms the creamy base of the sauce. You can use homemade or store-bought.
  • Dijon Mustard: Dijon has much fuller, richer and rounded flavor than regular yellow mustard which makes it ideal for this sauce. If you want to add a bit of sharpness and brightness to it, you can substitute a tablespoon or so of yellow mustard, but my preference is to use all Dijon. For the best flavor I always recommend Maille Dijon mustard.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: This adds a nice touch of fruitiness and is less harsh than white vinegar. It adds balance to the sweetness of the honey and also helps thin out the sauce.
  • Honey: I use raw honey because that’s what I buy and always have on hand, but any honey will do. You can adjust the quantity as desired for a sweeter or less sweet honey mustard sauce.
  • Cayenne Pepper: To add some balance and contrast to the sweetness. If you don’t like even the slightest bit of heat you can substitute paprika.
  • Onion Powder and Garlic Powder: For some savory earthiness and umami.
  • Salt: To tie everything together. You don’t need much because the mayonnaise already contains salt. You can omit the salt or add more as desired.

Honey Mustard Sauce Recipe

To make this honey mustard sauce simply place all of the ingredients in a bowl and whisk until thoroughly combined. Alternatively you can place the ingredients in a jar and shake until combined.

Store in the fridge in an airtight jar where it will keep for up to 2 weeks. For best flavor, chill for at least 4 hours before using.

Ways to Use It

Here are just a few ways you can enjoy it:

  • Dipping Sauce: Chicken nuggets or tenders, popcorn chicken, fish fingers or battered fish (see my fish and chips), raw vegetables and pretzels.
  • Sandwiches and Wraps
  • Burgers and Hot Dogs
  • Vegetables: Not only great for raw dipping, but also drizzled over roasted or steamed vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli.
  • Glaze: It’s great brushed over pork, chicken and salmon during the last few minutes of roasting.
  • Deviled Eggs: Mix some into the egg yolks.
  • Coleslaw and Potato Salad: Mix some into your Creamy Coleslaw or Classic Potato Salad for a tasty flavor twist.
  • Salad Dressing: Add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and an additional tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice for a delicious salad dressing that’s also great drizzled over grain bowls or tossed in pasta salads.

Enjoy!
